After the main group of settlers had passed us on the hill, Moran and I followed the rest of them up to the intersection at the top of the hill where many of them were milling around.

We wondered where Eva and Sarah were. We later found out that they had been forced into the shop by the crowd of settlers chanting “death to the arabs” and by the soldiers. The store keepers had bolted the door and showed them the back way out and they had made their way to the stairs of the apartment.

Gaza occupation continues after disengagement

The Israeli settlers have left, but the siege of Palestinian towns and villages in Gaza that lie near the old settlements continues unabated, according the latest report of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights.

The Israeli Defense Forces razed houses and leveled areas on the eastern border with Israel. They have limited the number of Palestinians from using the international border at Rafah – the only way Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are able to gain access to the international world. Israeli soldiers arrested two Palestinian children from the northern part of the Gaza Strip whom they believed entered Doughti settlement, which was demolished by the army. The two children were not identified.

Soldiers in Bil’in

At 2:30 am, two jeeps and 20 soldiers invaded Bil’in, taking photos and walking through the village. They went to a family’s home and asked questions. In addition, they stopped Abdullah, who had gotten up to investigate, and asked him what was going on in Bil’in.

The soldiers also asked the two internationals whether they lived in the village and what organization they were working with. They told Abdullah they knew who he was, but they weren’t going to arrest him.

Tel Rumeida – Stones & Struggle

The Tel Rumeida neighborhood of Hebron is a major flashpoint of tension between Palestinians and Israeli colonial settlers. Around forty Israeli soldiers protect over sixty of the most racist and violent of Israeli settlers, forcing over one thousand Palestinians (whose families have lived in Tel Rumeida for hundreds of years) to live in a virtual prison. Fences, walls, and checkpoints block every entrance to Tel Rumeida, and there are Israeli soldier posts throughout the neighborhood. Saturday, September 3, the day after the demonstration in Bil’in, two of us boarded a bus bound for Hebron, a town of 130,000 Palestinians, 600 lunatic settlers, and thousands of soldiers and police to ‘guard’ the settlers. Arriving at noon on Saturday, the day most settlers run rampant over everyone, we were told to immediately go to the top of the hill that separates settlers from Palestinians.

It was the children’s second day of school in the old city of Hebron. We had been asked to accompany them to prevent settler children from stoning small boys and girls.

Settlers had gone on a rampage yesterday, stoning us, the police and even the soldiers as they came down their ‘settler hill’. The police did nothing except look at these thugs throwing stones at us. When we asked where the teargas, sound bombs and rubber bullets were, they just shrugged.

Joy persists amid occupation

Yesterday, the first of September, Joy persisted through the dismay and hopelessness of occupation. A group called the Media Youth Collective came to the village of Bil’in bearing the tools of Renoir, Kahlo, Van Gough and others; they came with art supplies. This group of 5-10 high school and college-age avengers met quite a large group of 20-30 young girls and boys from the village to paint pictures and paint faces. The event arose much livliehood and light-heartedness to this community who has seen unpredictable, unexpected incursions by soldiers twice already this week.

Shot in the Shoulder

About 10 pm last night, soldiers came roaring into Bil’in, coming down the road by the school and throwing sound bombs at the village. As they continued down the road to the mosque, they began throwing tear gas as well.

They were met at the mosque by boys throwing stones, giving them an excuse to throw another tear gas container. A Palestinian man was shot in the shoulder by a rubber bullet as he was trying to stop the boys from throwing stones.
